Mexico
Czech Republic arrive at this Group A clash having lost their opener to South Korea, while Mexico carry the momentum of a confident home victory over South Africa. The model rates Mexico as clear favourites, and the market aligns closely with that view, leaving limited room for the Czechs.

The State of Play
After matchday one of Group A, the standings could hardly be more divergent. Mexico turned in a controlled opening performance at Azteca, defeating South Africa with goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez, while Czech Republic surrendered a lead against South Korea and were beaten 2-1 in a game they looked capable of winning before the final quarter-hour unravelled them.
The desk's Elo model carries a large ratings gap between these two sides, and it translates into a substantial model edge for Mexico. The market's implied probabilities land in roughly the same territory — there is a modest overlay for Mexico versus the implied odds, but the picture is broadly one of alignment rather than dramatic mispricing. The draw sits as the market's second-most likely outcome, though the model is somewhat cooler on that scenario.
Mexico's Momentum and Home Advantage
Playing at home gives Mexico a formidable structural edge. The Azteca's altitude, fervent support, and heat conditions have been cited as among the most significant home-ground advantages of the entire tournament. Javier Aguirre's side acknowledged debut nerves in the opener — the coach noted cramping and an inability to convert all of their superiority — yet still managed a comfortable margin of victory. With those nerves now behind them, a sharper display is plausible.
Raúl Jiménez, finally starting a World Cup match in his fourth tournament appearance, scored with a header and will be difficult to dislodge from the XI. Julián Quiñones arrives in form after finishing as the Saudi Pro League's top scorer. The teenage prodigy Gilberto Mora came off the bench and is already drawing comparisons to generational talents. One concern for Aguirre is that César Montes is suspended after his red card in stoppage time against South Africa, creating a reshuffle at centre-back.
Czech Republic's Fragile Position
This is only Czech Republic's second World Cup — their first appearance ended at the group stage in 2006 — and a maiden knockout-round appearance would represent a significant achievement. But their path to qualification was turbulent: Miroslav Koubek was installed after a dire UEFA Nations League campaign that saw Tomáš Souček stripped of the captaincy, and the Czechs reached the tournament only through penalty shootout victories over Ireland and Denmark in the play-offs.
Against South Korea, they took the lead through Ladislav Krejčí's header and had a second goal ruled out for offside before conceding twice in the final 20 minutes. South Korea outpossessed them heavily and demonstrated far superior technical quality. Czech Republic's reliance on direct play and set-piece moments will be tested even more severely by a Mexican side playing at altitude with a full crowd behind them. Patrik Schick — who averaged close to a goal every two caps in club football this season — is the main creative outlet, but he will need better service than Czechia managed in the opener.
